The ECOWAS Commission received a delegation from the French Development Agency (AFD) on June 26, 2026, at ECOWAS headquarters. The discussions focused on AFD's support in priority development sectors, likely to have a positive impact on the region and with a view to continued collaboration between ECOWAS and AFD.
This meeting allowed the two parties to review their areas of partnership based on a new positioning of AFD Group themes with regard to the ECOWAS 2050 vision. These new themes are divided into 5 pillars which are: Pillar I: Peace, security and stability, pillar II: governance and rule of law, pillar III: economic integration and interconnectivity, pillar IV: transformation, inclusive and sustainable development, pillar V: social inclusion.
The AFD delegation first met H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission for discussions on the objective of the mission and then had a working session with H.E. Madame Damtien TCHINTCHIBIDJA, Vice-President President of the ECOWAS Commission and the Directorates of the ECOWAS Commission as well as a representative of the West African Health Organization (WAHO).
The Vice-President in her opening speech thanked the AFD for this partnership with ECOWAS and indicated that all actions must be in accordance with the priorities of ECOWAS, its 2050 vision. She also hoped that Particular emphasis is placed on projects that can have a positive impact on youth.
Mr. Philippe Orliange, Executive Director in charge of Geographies at AFD France, thanked the ECOWAS Commission, in particular its External Relations Directorate, for the work carried out in the formulation and coordination of current actions. He further indicated that AFD is committed to working with ECOWAS on its priorities and on projects with a regional impact in various sectors such as security, artificial intelligence, agriculture, health, youth. , green energy, education, support to ECOWAS agencies and institutions in their mandate
The two partners have agreed to future meetings for a summary and in-depth discussions on the priority projects selected.
