SADC Takes Helm of Inter-RECs/RMsCoordination Platform

ECOWAS participated in the handover ceremony of the Inter-African Platform, which is now chaired by SADC.

The SADC Executive Secretary, H.E Elias M. Magosi, has assumed the Chairpersonship of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) Coordination and Collaboration Platform for a one-year term.

The handover took place on 13 February 2026, during the Meeting of the Inter-RECs/RMs Platform, held on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa.


Outgoing Chair, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, highlighted achievements under IGAD's tenure, including strengthened inter-REC coordination and alignment of strategies across trade, security, and sustainable development.


In his acceptance address, H.E. Magosi emphasized SADC's priority to ensure the Platform contributes to implementing Agenda 2063 flagship programmes.


The 8 AU RECs are AMU (Arab Maghreb Union), CEN-SAD (Community of Sahel-Saharan States), COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa), EAC (East African Community), ECCAS (Economic Community of Central African States), ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development), and SADC (Southern African Development Community).


The ECOWAS delegation, led by Mr. N'Dri Guillaume GNAMIEN and Mr. Jerome Boa, represented the President of ECOWAS at the meeting.
