ECOWAS Commission Reiterates Commitment to Regional Security and Stability during a visit


The ECOWAS Commission, led by the ECOWAS President represented by its Vice President, Damtien L. Tchintchibidja has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the security and stability of all member states. In a recent meeting with representatives from the Embassy of the United States of America to Nigeria and ECOWAS Commission, the Commission emphasized its opposition to any attacks against member states on 20 08 2024 in Abuja Nigeria.


The meeting highlighted the need for effective control measures to prevent the proliferation of arms in the region. The ECOWAS Commission has established the ECOWAS Convention on Arms Control, which requires member states to obtain approval from the President of ECOWAS before importing arms. The Convention also mandates the marking and tracing of arms to prevent illicit activities.


In addition, the Commission has implemented the ECOWAS Maritime Security and Awareness initiatives to reduce maritime crime (SAFE DOMAIN) . These initiatives has resulted in a significant decrease in maritime crime, with the support of partners like the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).


The meeting also discussed the importance of chemical convention and the need for cooperation and communication to prevent the misuse of chemicals. The ECOWAS Commission is working with partners CRESMAO and CRESMAC to enhance coordination and cooperation in maritime Security.


The two parties have agreed to collaborate on legislation and capacity-building events to prevent the misuse of chemicals.


The ECOWAS Commission has also expressed interest in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance early warning systems and improve regional security.


"We need a better control of all these issues," said the Vice President of ECOWAS. "We can be interested in AI to support our efforts."


The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued cooperation and collaboration between ECOWAS and its partners to ensure the security and stability of the region.
